Grand Island police say a 14 year old boy was killed late Wednesday night after falling on the tracks and being hit by a Union Pacific train.

Cody Christensen of Grand Island was pronounced dead on the scene.

Emergency crews responded to the train crossing at South Garfield and West Third Street around 10:40 pm.

Grand Island Police have determined a group of youths were on the north side of the tracks when one cut across in front of a westbound train.

Christensen, following him, attempted to cross and fell on the tracks where the train hit him.

The Union Pacific train was not derailed in the accident and alcohol was not a contributing factor.

The crossing is not one of those recently designated as a quiet zone crossing.
