UNK holds vigil for hate crime victims
UNK students are doing their part to bring awareness to hate crimes.
Wednesday night, they held a vigil to honor Matthew Shepard and other victims killed over their sexual orientation. The event took place at the bell tower on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus. It was a part of Support Love week on campus. In 1998, Matthew Shepard was tied to a fence and beaten to death in an area east of Laramie, Wyoming. Shepard's death brought national attention to homophobia. And, it was labeled a hate crime. Fourteen years later many people are still facing the same challenges that Matthew Shepard dealt with. "I hope to get people to talk about it. I hope more people see this - especially parents. I think when parents see this and I think they need to come together and form together and make changes. We got to because if we don’t, and our parents don’t, these kind of things will continue to happen," said Tyson Radcliffe. "Support Love" week concludes Thursday with a workshop to teach students how to be respectful to those in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender community. |
