Voter ID bill resurfaces in legislature
After being defeated in last year's legislative session, a voter ID bill has once again emerged in the unicameral.
The Legislature's Government, Military, and Veterans Affairs Committee has heard a measure requiring Nebraska voters to show ID at the polls. Those in favor of LB 381 say it would prevent fraud. But more than 25 Nebraska organizations oppose the legislation arguing it disproportionately impacts youth, seniors, low income citizens and citizens with disabilities. No action was taken in committee. Also in legislative news, Secretary of State John Gale is throwing his support behind a bill that would change how Nebraska's electoral votes are allocated making it a winner take all state. Right now Nebraska distributes its electoral votes by congressional districts. Maine is the only other state that splits its votes. |
