Water spike sets off Grand Island fire alarms

Tools

A water spike caused fire alarms to go off at multiple locations throughout Grand Island this morning; including the Conestoga Mall and both Walmarts.

Grand Island's Utilities Director says there are 8 different pumps used to pump water into the city water system.

Workers switch from one pump to another as water demand increases or decreases in certain sections of the city.

While switching between two pumps just before 9:00 Tuesday morning,
one pump was left on a little longer which caused the pressure spike.

Luchsinger says it's not a mistake made very often, but having too much pressure is better than too little.
