What's Going Around: Allergies, dry mouth, chicken pox

by Ginger ten Bensel

From mono to seasonal allergies there's always something sending us to our local doctors. Here's what's going around this week.

Doctor Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice says he's seen a lot of patients with sinus infections and allergies. Dr. Johnson said he's also seen one case mono.

One test for the illness is a mono spot blood test and it takes a week to find out the results..

Dr. Johnson also discussed dry mouth. Dry mouth is a common symptom caused by certain medications. Some doctors may change the dosage or suggest an alternative medication.

There is an illness called Sjorgrens syndrome. The symptoms for this disease are dry mouth and dry eyes.

Dr. Michael Hanich with the Kearney Clinic says that allergies are the number one issue that many of his patients are dealing with this week.

Dr. Janice Kutilek with the Grand Island Clinic says she's seen one patient with chicken pox this week.

Dr. Kutilek says that there is a new state law that requires children who are going to public schools to have two chicken pox vaccinations before school if they haven't already had the illness.

The first vaccination is generally done when the child is two years old.
The child that came in to her office with Chicken Pox was four years old and only had one chicken pox vaccination.

Dr. Kutilek says that if your child is going to school next year that now is a good time to go ahead and get their second chicken Pox vaccination.
