What's Going Around: colds, bronchitis, viral myositis
Colds and bronchitis are going around Central Nebraska.
Dr. Janice Kutilek with the Grand Island Clinic says that the common cold is going around. Symptoms include a runny nose, cough, and sometimes a fever or a sore throat. Kutilek is still seeing patients with gastroenteritis. And she says two other illnesses you don't hear about very often are going around. The first one is Henock Schonlein Purpura. The autoimmune disease attacks the blood vessels causing them to become inflamed and leak. The skin is the most commonly affected part of your body. With the illness you can see and feel what looks like bulging bruises. The illness goes away on its own. The second one is Viral Myositis. It causes inflammation of the muscles and occurs several weeks after the patient has had a virus. Symptoms include severe muscle pain. Doctor Michael Hanich with the Kearney Clinic says he is still seeing a lot of patients with allergies. Hanich did say that the recent freeze might help some people with their allergies but he says that it generally needs to stay cold for a while to get rid of those seasonal allergies. Hanich is also seeing patients with bronchitis. Dr. Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice says he's seeing patients with colds and bronchitis too. Symptoms include cough and congestion. And just like in Kearney, Johnson says that allergies are still a problem in the Hastings area. Patients are sniffling, sneezing and dealing with itchy eyes.
