What's Going Around: Croup, diarrhea, common cold
Some major illnesses are popping up around central Nebraska.
Dr. Janice Kutlek with the Grand Island Clinic says croup is going around. Symptoms of the upper respiratory infection include hoarseness and coughing with the cough getting worse at night. It can also cause swelling in the voice box. The symptoms of croup are worse during the first three to four days. With the illness it's important to drink lots of fluids and make sure you get plenty of rest. It can help if you put a medicated rub, like Vick's, on your child's chest. If your child is having difficulty breathing or struggling to breathe make sure you take them in to see a doctor. Kutilek says that she has seen a lot of patients with diarrhea. Some have viral diarrhea and one patient has e.coli. E.coli is a bacteria that spreads in food products and its spread by fecal oral transmission. Kutilek says this is just a reminder of how important it is to wash your hands after using the bathroom. Kutilik has also seen patients with allergies and asthma. Doctor Michael Hanich with the Kearney Clinic says he wants to remind everyone to get a flu shot. He says that this year is expected to be a big flu season. He says getting a flu shot in October allows the body a couple months to build up immunity. Hanich has also seen patients with blood pressure problems, diabetes and thyroid abnormalities. Dr. Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice says that the common cold is going around. He has also seen some patients with a sore throat.
