What's Going Around: Flu, RSV, gastrointeritis
Seasonal illnesses continue to make their way through Central Nebraska. News 5's Ginger ten Bensel spoke with area doctors about the flu and other illensses in this week's edition of "What's Going Around."
Dr. Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family practice says the number of patients coming in with the flu is slowing down. But he is still seeing patients with the flu, gastroenteritis, the common cold and RSV. Along with that he's seeing children with ear infections. Dr. Michael Hanich with the Kearney Clinic says that he is still seeing the flu. He says that RSV and the flu are calming down but he is seeing a virus that mimics the flu. Things are a little bit different in Grand Island. Dr. Janice Kutilek with the Grand Island Clinic says that she is seeing a resurgence of the flu. She said the number of flu cases was dwindling down and all of a sudden it's back on the radar screen. Kutilek is also seeing a lot of patients with RSV. She had to hospitalize two more children with RSV. With RSV there is more wheezing and labored breathing than with the flu. Kutilek says that many times children are hospitalized with RSV because of dehydration. They come in needing an IV or oxygen support. Medication can't make RSV go away... only time. She is also seeing patients with gastroenteritis and eczema. She says keep your skin moisturized, avoid perfumed lotions, soaps and detergents. And keep your finger nails clean because the skin can get infected if you scratch it when you have eczema. |
