A number of different illnesses are going around central Nebraska. Doctor Michael Hanich with the Kearney Clinic says sinus infections and bronchitis are going around.

The Kearney doctor says that once it gets really cold outside sinus issues will stop for a little while, but he expects to see more bronchitis.

Hanich says that he has also seen several patients with gastroenteritis.

If the patient has bacterial gastroenteritis he or she can be treated with antibiotics, but Hanich says antibiotics kill off the good bacteria that help prevent problems with C. Difficile.

Symptoms of the potentially deadly illness C. Diff include chronic diarrhea.

If the patient comes down with C.Difficile the illness has to be treated with an antibiotic such as flagyl or metronitozol and if those medications are not effective the patient may need vancomycin for treatment of C.Diff.

If gastroenteritis is viral, the best way to get over it is to rest the stomach. Restrict the intake of caffeine, chocolate, spicy foods, greasy foods, milk products, and other foods that take more energy to digest.

Dr. Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice has seen some of the same illnesses that are going around in the Kearney area.

Bronchitis and sinus infections are going around in Hastings plus Johnson has seen several patients with viral diarrhea.
