What's Going Around: Sinus infections, cold, gastroenteritis
A lot of different illnesses are still going around Central Nebraska. Dr. Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice says that he is seeing patients with sore throats, but he has not seen any patients with strep throat.
Plus, he says that colds, sinus infections, and gastroenteritis are also going around. A sinus infection and the common cold have a lot of the same symptoms. One of the signs that it could be a sinus infection... if you don't get better or you get worse over the course of a week. If your symptoms don't improve in two weeks... it could be a bacterial infection. If you believe you have a sinus infection...don't expect to get antibiotics until you've had the illness for a week or two. If you have a high fever and congestion... you may need antibiotics. Johnson also says he is seeing patients with allergic rhinitis which is otherwise known as hay fever. Dr. Janice Kutilek with the Grand Island Clinic says that she's seeing patients with RSV and Gastroenteritis. She also discussed a pediatric issue that is not going around but it's important to be aware of. She had a one year old patient come in with her arm dangling by her side. She had a dislocated elbow. It's called a radial head dislocation. The radius makes the arm move up and down. The ligament around the head of the radius is attached to the elbow and it is not fully developed in a small child. It's easy for the ligament to slip when a child under the age of three is playing with other kids who are pulling on the child's arms. If your child has ever had a dislocated elbow it's important to pick him or her up under the arms by the chest and do not pull on the arm. |
