Fire crews are fighting a wildfire that is burning in the Bessey Ranger District near Halsey.

According to the Nebraska National Forest Service, the fire has burned about 1,000 acres.

Officials believe the fire started following a lightning storm Saturday afternoon.

The fire is burning in a dense forested area that is steep with sandy hills, making it difficult for crews. As of Sunday, the fire is 20 percent contained.

Two other fires in the area have been contained. They are only a few miles away. One of the fires was north of Stapleton and the other was near Ringgold.
