Wildfires leave ranchers with extensive damage

This summer's drought has wreaked havoc on cattle producers in North Central Nebraska. The recent wildfires are adding to their headaches.

Nearly 20 ranchers have seen their pastures and hay fields blackened as part of the nearly 72,000 acre blaze.

Due to the damage to their land many of the ranchers are being forced to sell cattle earlier than planned.

Drought conditions have already raised the cost of supplemental feed.
A year ago, hay sold for around $65 a ton.

Now, the cost is up to $160 a ton.

So far, there are no reports of any cattle deaths from the fires.
