Charles Dean McGowan the son of Charles E. and Mary (Singer) McGowan was born July 30, 1913 on a farm in Republic County Kansas, near Scandia. He departed this life on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Center in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 99 years.
Dean was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Hardy, NE. As a young boy he attended Rosemound school through the 8th grade and graduated from Hardy High School with the class of 1932.
Dean farmed for his parents for a number of years, subsidizing his income during the depression by trapping. He was united in marriage to Viola Petersen on September 23, 1943 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Deshler, NE. This union was blessed with the birth of two sons. Dean and Viola remained on the farm for sixteen years before moving into Superior, NE in 1960. Dean began his employment with Mid America Dairymen, retiring in 1978. He then worked at Jack and Jill Grocery store for 4 years.
Dean was a devoted and loving, husband, father, grandfather and brother. He loved being outdoors - hunting, fishing, gardening, birdwatching or just enjoying nature. Dean loved sports and was passionate in the support of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all they pursued. He was a long time member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hardy, a 12 year member of the Superior Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Danish Brotherhood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters: Wanda Hutt, Dorothy Erkenbrack, and Jean Snavely.
Survivors inlcude his wife Viola of Superior, NE; sons Stephen McGowan and wife Marlene of Superior, NE; Thomas McGowan and wife Jane of Omaha, NE; sister Virginia Petersen of Republic, KS; grandchildren: Kim Williams and husband David of Superior, NE; Shaun McGowan of Fremont, NE; Mollie Lemberg and husband Karl of Washington D.C.; Kellie Krall and husband Jason of Wellington, New Zealand; Patrick McGowan and girlfriend Katia Bergeron Cauchon of Toronto, Canada; great-grandchildren: Heather Williams of Los Angeles, CA; Lauren Isaacson and husband Jordan of Superior, NE; Amy Williams and fiance Tim Meyers of San Francisco, CA; Rhys Williams of Superior, NE; Caleb Dean McGowan of Fremont, NE; great-great- granddaughter Avaleigh Isaacson of Superior, NE; nieces, nephews other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 23, at 2:00 p.m. from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hardy, NE. Pastor Myron Meyer will officiate. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Superior. Condolences may be sent to the family at wmsfh.com. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the Superior Good Samaritan Center.
