John D. Keslar
Funeral Services for John D. Keslar will be conducted from the First Baptist Church in Oxford, Nebraska on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Paul Sowden, officiating. Interment will be in the Oxford Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Oxford American Legion Post #219 in conjunction with the United States Army National Guard Military Honors Team.
John David Keslar, 64 years of age, of Oxford, passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at his home in Oxford, following a brief battle with cancer. John was born June 2, 1948 at Osh Kosh, Nebraska, the only child born to David and Dorothy (Scott) Keslar. John graduated from Minden High School with the class of 1966. He then pursued higher education at Kearney State College in Kearney, Nebraska.
On July 1, 1968 he was inducted into the United States Navy, serving his country during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge on July 14, 1971. John then continued to serve in the Nebraska Army National Guards from March 1, 1976 until April 30, 1993.
On February 24, 1973 he was united in marriage to Susan Kay Covey at Oxford and to this union four children were born: Teresa, Shawn, Nicholas, and Brent. The family made their home in Oxford, where John was employed by Big A Auto Parts and South Central Diesel both of Holdrege for several years. He then began his career in parts management at Brooks Ford in Oxford for twenty-two years and most recently at Janssen Ford in Holdrege as Parts Manager for the past five years. John was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oxford, the Oxford American Legion Post #219, where he currently served as Commander, Cardinal Country Club Board Member, served on the Oxford Baseball Committee, coached the Oxford Legion Baseball Team from 1993 – 2000, past member and President of the Oxford Rotary Club, and former member of the Oxford Fire and Rescue.
John loved golfing, fishing, hunting, tinkering with his 1953 Ford, enjoyed umpiring baseball games, loved attending his grandchildren’s activities, and most of all spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Marvin Covey.
John leaves to mourn his passing his wife; Sue Keslar of Oxford; his daughter, Teri Keslar of Oxford; three sons: Shawn Keslar and his wife, Carrie of Clatonia, Nebraska, Nick Keslar of Oxford, and Brent Keslar of Oxford; eight grandchildren: Samantha Miller, Hunter, Savana, and Sawyer Quinn, Shaylee, Cash, and Boone Keslar, and McKynli Keslar; one great-granddaughter, Livviona; mother-in-law, Verda Covey of Oxford; three sisters-in-law: Marva Jo Kirkendall and her husband, Joe of Oxford, Dorothy Wilbur and her husband, Larry of Holdrege, and Kathleen Barnes and her husband, Darrell of Albion, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Michael Covey and his wife, Kim of Holdrege; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Mitchell-Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Oxford.
A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
