Agnes was born November 28, 1914 on a farm near Woodruff, Kansas, the eldest of two daughters born to James and Ana (Bruning) Hodge. She received her primary education from a rural school near Woodruff, and then graduated from Alma High School with the class of 1933. Following graduation, she went to Chicago to work for her uncle in an ice cream cone factory for a year, and then returned to Bertrand and worked at the cafe.
On August 13, 1936, she was united in marriage to Wesley Liljehorn in North Platte, Nebraska. To this union four children were born: Barbara, Janet, Judith, and James. The couple resided in Pine Bluff, Wyoming for a short time and then moved to a farm south of Bertrand. In 1946, they moved to a farm ¼ mile east of Bertrand. On March 6, 1983, Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley. After Wesley’s passing Agnes moved into Bertrand. She resided in this same home until March of 2010, when she began to make her home at the Bertrand Nursing Home at the age of 95.
Agnes was employed by the Bertrand School and the Bertrand Nursing Home for 20 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and served as President of the Women’s Society. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends and her great love for baseball was known to everyone. She always looked forward to the World Series, and was disappointed when her favorite teams didn’t do well. Agnes also enjoyed being a visitation hostess for the Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand for over 15 years.
