Paul R. Swanson, 83, of St. Paul died Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Randy Dilts will officiate. Inurnment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.
Masonic services will be presented by St. Paul Masonic Lodge #82 AF & AM. A flag presentation will be conducted by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul.
Visitation will be held on Friday, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Mr. Swanson was born November 17, 1929 at Grand Island, Nebraska to Joseph and Ruth (Whiting) Swanson.
He was raised in Grand Island. Paul had a great love for music. He taught music at Scottsbluff, then at Gering, CO and in Greeley, Colorado as he was earning his Masters Degree in Music. Paul went on to receive his Doctorate of Music Degree at Greeley, Colorado while also being employed there.
Paul entered into the United States Air Force on August 29, 1951. He served as Staff Sergeant in the Air Force. He was honorably discharged on June 21, 1955.
He was united in marriage to Jeanine M. Kilpatrick on August 5, 1956 in Grand Island, Nebraska.
From 1966-1976, Paul worked at University South Dakota State in Springfield, SD as Head of the Music Department.
From 1976 until his retirement in 1995, he worked as Head of the Music Department at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln.
The couple moved to St. Paul in 1995. Paul was a 16 year Director of the Choir at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul.
Jeanine passed away on May 18, 2000 and Paul continued to live in St. Paul.
Paul was a member of the United Methodist Church in St. Paul, a member of the Masonic Lodge #82 AF & AM in St. Paul, a lifetime member of the American Choral Director Association and the Retired Music Teachers Association and he was also a member of the Tri-F.
Paul was survived by a son, Jeff and his fiancée Shannon Shaefer of St. Paul; a daughter & son-in-law, Dr. Kristi & Bob Harkins of Madrid, IA; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanine; a brother Milton Swanson and a sister, Charlotte Diechman.
