Vera Elizabeth Mason, 100, of Grand Island, died Monday, January 14, 2013 at Golden Living Center Lakeview.

Graveside services will be at 11 AM Friday at Walnut Hills Cemetery in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4-6 pm Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to St Francis Hospice.

Vera was born on May 17, 1912 at Villisca, Iowa to Walter Elsworth and Minnie (Towers) Smith. She grew up and received her education in Villisca.

She was united in marriage to Lynn Mason on July 4, 1930 at Red Oak, Iowa. The couple made their home in Red Oak and then Malvern, IA where she worked at Kolterman Five and Dime Store. They later moved to Council Bluffs where she worked for Kresge’s Co. Following retirement they moved to Minden, Iowa where Lynn and his son, Lynn Jr., operated a gas station. In 1985 they moved to Grand Island where they remained. Mr. Mason preceded her in death on March 1, 2004, a few months short of their 75th wedding anniversary.

Vera was a member of the Methodist Church in Malvern. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, listening to Lawrence Welk and vacation trips with her husband, especially to Casper, Wyoming. Most of all Vera enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors of the immediate family include her son, Lynn Mason, Jr. of Grand Island; a granddaughter, Teri and her husband Martin Schaff of Litchfield Park, AZ and a grandson, Jay Mason of Bennett, NE.

She is also survived by four great grandchildren, Joshua Mason, Taylor Mason, Becky Cook and April (Anthony) Algeri; and three great great grandchildren, Connor Algeri, Alyssa Algeri and Madison Cook.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter-in-law, Violet Mason, a brother, and four half brothers.
