Virdena Susan Schlink, she was called Virdena by some people and Susie by other, was born October 10, 1013 to Amy (Morris) and Frederick Kolb on a farm southeast of Riverton, Nebraska. She departed this life on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud, Nebraska.
She grew up on the farm and attended school in Riverton, graduating with the class of 1932. After high school Susie married Lloyd Tietjen and they lived in Riverton and raised two daughter, Joan and Carole, now Joan Bohrer and Carole Stephens.
Susie always loved sports and played women's softball, often called kittenball in those days, even after she was married and had the girls. She also ran a creamery in Riverton for the Fairmont Creamery Company.
Later Susie and Lloyd divorced and she and the girls moved to California, where she worked in several different jobs. She married Ted Gray, and after he passed away, she married Willard Schlink. Susie and Willard lived in Mesa, Arizona for many years. After Willard died, Susie moved to Red Cloud, Nebraska where she lived with her daughter, Joan Bohrer. In 2005, she moved to the Heritage Care Center.
Susie was baptized as an infant in the Congregational Church in Riverton, and later in life she joined the Unity Church of Mesa. She was a faithful member there for many, many years.
Susie was a fun-loving person who loved to play jokes on people, and laugh and sing. She was disappointed in later years when she could no longer sneak up behind you and scare you or make you laugh somehow.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her sisters, Audrey Kolb Dunkin and Mary Kolb Hamilton; a brother, Freddie Kolb; a grandson, David Stephens; a great granddaughter, Jocelyn Bohrer, and her husbands.
Remaining to grieve for her are her daughters, Joan Bohrer and husband Jim of Red Cloud, Nebraska; Carole Stephens and husband George of Omaha, Nebraska; 6 grandchildren, Bud Bohrer, Melody Bohrer Bean, Richard Bohrer, Roger Bohrer, Sharon Stephens Jensen and Michael Stephens; 19 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; nephews Tim and Chris Kolb; other nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, 10:30 a.m., January 26, 2013 at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud with the Rev. Steve Wilson officiating. Interment will be at the Riverton Cemetery.
