Virginia Nelson, 90, of St. Paul died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at the Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Grand Island.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Chaplain Mark Hartley will officiate. Burial will be held in Elmwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1500 S. 70th Street #201, Lincoln NE 68506 or to the Donor’s Choice.
Virginia was born March 19, 1922 to Roy and Irene (Kimberly) Norris in Ord, Nebraska.
She grew up in Arcadia and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1938.
Virginia was united in marriage to Clark “Bing” Beck September 24, 1941 in Grand Island, Nebraska.
The couple lived in Scotia and Wolbach for several years before moving to St. Paul where they raised their family.
She had many talents. During WWII she mended women’s nylon hosiery because they were a scarcity and difficult to buy. She later worked in Bartle’s Dry Goods Store where she applied her seamstress skills for family and others. Later on she and her husband, Bing, worked at the American Legion Club in St. Paul. After Bing’s death on December 22, 1969, she continued to work at the Legion and at Paul’s Supper Club. She always said how much she enjoyed her time working with the staff, adults and kids. She made many friends in her years working at the clubs.
Paul’s Supper Club was where she met her second husband, Robert Nelson. Virginia was united marriage to Robert Nelson on January 27, 1984 in Ord, Nebraska.
The couple made their home in St. Paul. Robert passed away in November 1988.
Virginia was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved being around her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was always taking care of someone and was willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends.
Virginia was an avid golfer, enjoyed bowling and playing bridge. She loved to dance and sing and appreciated all kinds of music.
She was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Those left to cherish her memory are her two daughters & sons-in-law, Lonnie & Mark Fuerniss of Lincoln and Jeanette & Dennis Santin of Grand Island; six grandchildren, Jody Vernon and husband Neil of Richmond Hill, GA, Nikki Buchanan and husband Eric of Lincoln, Amy Mancini and husband Kevin of Denver Colorado, Jennifer Dubas and husband Bryan of Fullerton, Alexis Santin of Washington, D.C. and Joshua Willey and wife Amanda of Crete; and 14 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters; Marjorie Elliot and Ahlene Sargent, and a grandson, Michael Patrick Willey.
