Americans struggle under student loan debt

Tools

A record number of Americans are saddled with some kind of student debt.

A study by the Pew Research Center found that 22.4 million households or nearly one in five had college debt in 2010.

The increase was driven by higher tuition costs as well as rising college enrollment during the economic downturn.

The average outstanding college debt was $26,682 in 2010.

The biggest burden fell on the young and poor.
