Lawmaker proposes removing toys in kid meals

by

If one Lincoln lawmaker has his way, children would not find a toy packed into their fast-food kids meal if that meal fails to meet minimum nutritional standards.

The measure would prohibit toy giveaways in fast-food children's
meals that have more than 500 calories for most meals, or 400
calories for breakfast meals. The meals also could also have no
more than 640 milligrams of sodium and must contain fruits or
non-fried vegetables.

The bill would also limit saturated fats, trans fats and sugar
in meals that include a toy.

State Sen. Bill Avery of Omaha introduced the bill (LB126),
saying he wants to combat childhood obesity in Nebraska and force
fast food restaurants to help in that endeavor.

The Legislature's Agriculture Committee heard the bill on
Tuesday.
