More independents register in Nebraska

Tools

Nebraska is seeing a steady increase in voters who are shunning both political parties and registering as independents. But party leaders disagree about the significance of the trend.

According to the Secretary of State's office, nearly $228,000 voters have registered as "nonpartisan," a 16 percent increase since the 2008 presidential race.

The number of registered Democrats and Republicans has dropped during that period, but that decline has been small for the GOP.

There are now more than 373,000 Democrats in Nebraska - down about 20,000 from 2008.

The number of Republicans also dwindled, down slightly to about 557,000.

Friday marked the deadline for voters to register before the Nov. 6th election.
