Veterans lend support to Heineman's tax proposal
Governor Dave Heineman stood shoulder to shoulder with Nebraska veterans in Lincoln Wednesday morning as the Department of Nebraska Veterans of Foreign Wars Council of Administration
announced its support of LB 405.
Under the bill, taxes would be eliminated on retirees, including military veterans. News 5's Josh Egbert was in Lincoln Wednesday morning. Josh Egbert: Several members of the VFW were with the governor this morning. The VFW recently voted unanimously to endorse LB 405. LB 405, of course, is a comprehensive tax reform bill that calls for the elimination of Nebraska state income tax on all income to include social security benefits as well as military and civil service pensions. The VFW members I spoke with say that their exemption from state income tax would lower the tax burden on those who can least afford to pay any income tax. They say many of their members survive day to day on these forms of benefits and pension payments. The governor will be testifying later on LB 405 as it is introduced in committee. The bill is sponsored by Senator Beau McCoy. We will have complete coverage of that tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. Amy West: We want to also ask you a question on everybody's mind right now about Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy and the position he left vacant. Did the governor say anything about that? Josh Egbert: He did touch on that this morning. He says that this week his main focus is, of course, this tax reform. He's continuing to gather names of individuals that recommend people for that post. Next week he will take those names, dwindle those down, call people for interviews. We are still probably a couple weeks away from naming a new lieutenant governor. |
