State Fair showcases fine art exhibits
The fairgrounds in Grand Island are abuzz with preparations for year three of the State Fair in the City of Kindness. Opening ceremonies begin Friday. But, judging for the open class exhibits is already underway.
News 5's Lauren Conley got an inside peek at the fine arts competition. The fine arts competition has a wide variety of art, and it's still growing. Just this year they added new categories to submit artwork. The exhibit displays paintings, beadwork, photography and other creative pieces made from people of all ages. Fair organizers are seeing an increase in entries from last year - something that may be a result of the move to Grand Island. "It opened up an opportunity for those that maybe are in smaller towns that are further out west that maybe Lincoln was too far for them to go and they're able to come see and put their art in because maybe it's more attainable," said Fine Arts Competition Superintendent Kourteney Patcher. Patcher sees a lot of quality art but one that stood out this year was made by a 9 year old boy. He submitted a wooden bird house that wowed the judges. His attention to detail earned the creative youngster a first place ribbon. But he's not the only kid leaving an impression. "That's always fun because they have the best imagination, so everything they bring in seems to be really unique and original," said Patcher. She says the judging is tricky, but they look at technique, originality and look for the art that really stands out. You can check out all the open class exhibits throughout the duration of the State Fair. They're located in the Fonner Park grandstand. The State Fair kicks off on Friday and runs through September 3rd. |
