Tractor owners come out for world's largest parade
They are essential to almost every Nebraska farm...a tractor. And this week RFD-TV is trying to break a world record of classic tractors in a parade.
Tractors just like this one have come from across the country in anticipation for the parade Saturday. It will be the largest parade of tractors this state's ever seen, and the biggest in the world. Each of these giant machines has a story behind it. "We probably bought this 25 years ago at least bought it from a friend of mine. He had it all tore up in the shop and I bought it as a basket case and put it together and been using it ever since," said Scott Osborn. "My mother was the person in our family that wanted to restore tractors and she bought this one in Ogallala, Ne," said Linda Lapp. "Oh, I decided to join in on the tractor ride, see if we get in the Guiness Book of Records for it. I hate to have Germany have all of it," Lyle Nicholson said. The Guinness World Record is 745 tractors and drivers in a single parade, but not for long. "We came out to participate in the Guiness Book of World's Record tractor parade," Lapp said. "I got three of my own and then the guy I help out, he's got two here," said Ray Oberbroekling. Over 1100 tractors are lined up across the track at a standstill and everyone is anxious for the big day tomorrow. "It's kind of awesome. You can't hardly believe this many tractors could be in one spot at one time," said Osborn. "It's quite a deal. We're gonna break the record I guess big time," Oberbroekling said. Each tractor must be at least 30 years old in order to qualify. "I brought a 1939 Hef 20 tractor the last one they made in the Hef 20 line," said Raymond Pendergst. And these farm machines come from 31 different states across the country. "It's amazing, haha, it's amazing. I heard that there's somebody already here from Maine," said Nicholson. "I visited with some people from Michigan that come here which is 1000 miles," Pendergst said. The farthest trip? Harrisberg, Oregon - over 1700 miles. "It gets people out. I think people enjoy seeing the equipment. My generation and the generation before me used to farm with and to let them know that it isn't just a hobby," said Nicholson. "These tractors work and they work hard." Watching the wheels turn as the tractor parade rolls on is a memorable experience for all. "Just being with all the other tractor enthusiast and listening to their stories and everybody is so proud of their equipment and we're excited," Lapp said. "It's just a sight you probably only see once in your life ya know to see that many older tractors. It's amazing," said Pendergst. The record breaking event will take place on Saturday. |
