Bruning outlines priorities for legislative session
Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning has lined up legislation he would like to see passed during this year's legislative session.
News 5's Dara Newson found out what takes top priority to Bruning this year and why. He looked at four separate things: 1. Disarming or attempting to disarm a peace officer in the line of duty. 2. Stronger protection for Nebraska consumers when it comes to security breaches. 3. Add Nebraska to list of states protecting companies restricting investments to Iran. 4. Make separate offenses for voluntary and involuntary manslaughter when it comes to driving vehicles. A security breach at UNL this year was one of the events that inspired Bruning to push for stronger security measures. Fourteen separate data breaches were connected to Nebraska and 45% of Nebraskans were affected. In 2011, 550 cases were related to identity theft. It's an obvious increase so they are aiming to crack down on hackers and protect consumers in Nebraska. Bruning also wants to make two unique classes for manslaughter when it comes to people driving their vehicles. The goal is to separate those who intentionally kill and those who may have had an accident and didn't see the person or might have run the red light.
