Lt. Governor Sheehy talks sales tax reform
After the state of the state, Governor Heineman and Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy traveled the state Tuesday as part of the state of the state tour.
News 5 caught up with the Lieutenant Governor at the Hastings Municipal Airport Tuesday. Education and tax reform among the top priorities. Lieutenant Governor Sheehy says the state exempts $5 billion in sales tax a year. "So if we were to change how we do sales tax in the state of Nebraska, one thing we could do is do away with the income tax system. One thing that a lot of people look at is we tax social security benefits, we tax retirement benefits of people in the military. If we did not exempt as many sales tax items, we could do away with income taxes," said Sheehy. The proposal includes eliminating corporate income tax. Governor Heineman says this part of the tax reform won't affect the budget. |
