Senator introduces new texting and driving bill

Helping to save lives. That's the goal from one state lawmaker has he introduces two pieces of legislation aimed at protecting drivers on the road.

Scotts Bluff Senator John Harms introduced a bill Monday that would make texting while driving a primary offense. Meaning police officers could pull you over specifically for texting and driving.

Senator Harms also introduced a bill that would make seat belt violations a primary offense.

"I want to bring them back up for discussion, another policy discussion, if the legislators decide they would like to pursue it then we'll persue it and if the committee doesn't it won't be, but I think it's important, both of these bills are centered around safety as far as I'm concerned," said Harms.

Senator Harms says roads are becoming more dangerous because people are texting and driving and aren't being safe.

He introduced the original legislation for both bills a few years back.
