Fonner Park gets ready for big race
The big race is just a day away. The Bosselman Gus Fonner Stakes takes place Saturday at Fonner Park bringing in some of the best horses in the region.
Surplus, Shadow-be-dancing and Ransom Roberto are the favorites according to the odds makers as all come in at five to one or better but with No It Ain't having the worst odds at just 15 to 1 the ten horse field looks to be very well matched giving a couple owners with local ties good reason to believe 2012 is their year to take the race. "I run in it six time with a horse named Skunk Tail and never won it, I run second twice and a third and so I'd like to win. This has been home for me all my life so this is kinda the premier race for Grand Island always in the past and I'd sure like to win it," said Stanley Mankin. "It's huge not only because it's a local race but also because we have a great tradition with the Bosselman family. They just lost Chuck and Fred was kinda a grandpa to me so and stuff. I always told Fred and Chuck, hey, someday I'm going to get some of your money. [Laughter] And, hopefully, it's this year...exactly," said Monte Hehnke. The Bosselman is the ninth of ten races Saturday and should start around 5:50. The favorite around the news room is The Nutz, but my gut feeling says bet it all on Surplus. |
