Gavers returns to alma mater to coach basketball
22 years. 421 wins. 19 top ten finishes. And a state title in 2000 Not a bad run for Bill Gavers at the helm of the Grand Island Central Catholic basketball team
But after over two decades manning the sidelines for the Crusaders, Coach Gavers, opting to make a move to a different, but familiar sideline.
Bill Gavers was formally announced Monday as the new head coach basketball coach at his alma mater, Hastings College.
Gavers played at HC from 1986 to 1988 and was a member of the 1987-1988 league championship team. Needless to say it's a dream come true for Gavers to come back and coach the Broncos
"Today is a great day, it's also a tough day. There is two sides to every coin. I met with my players at Central Catholic this morning. That was a difficult process an emotional process but then there is the side of the coin the joyous part of it," said Gavers.
"We not only are, obviously, are trying to have great teams, and that is what Bill is going to continue to bring and bring to us, but also we need to produce good young men and that is what he's done for years and he'll continue to do that and that's very important to all of us," said Hastings College Athletic Director Jerry Schmutte.
Players also got to weigh in during the hiring process. They were especially impressed with Gavers and are happy he'll be their head coach.
"He has a sense of humor at the same time he was willing to work. He knew what this job was going to entail, he knew that it would be an adjustment for him and he was willing," said Bronco forward Dylan Flinn.
"Coach Gavers is a great guy. I can't say enough about him and the way he does things. Like you said in his press conference, he is always striving for excellence and that is something we're excited to have in our program," Hastings Bronco guard Jake Hamburger said.
"It's a no brainer. He's got the tools to be an outstanding college basketball coach," said former Hastings Bronco Coach Mike Trader.
Before taking over at GICC, Gavers served as an assistant coach under Mike Trader from 1988 to 1991. While also teaching and coaching tennis at Hastings High, he'll officially become head coach of the Broncos June 1st as he inherits a team that losses only two players from this year's 20 win club.
