Grand Island gears up for High School Volleyball Championships
For a 3rd straight year, the City of Grand Island is set to host the Nebraska high school state volleyball championship tournament for the next three days. It is an event of which the community takes pride and one it plans on keeping annually for a long time.
It's ready, set, spike for the 2012 Nebraska State Volleyball tournament starting Thursday at 9:00 am sharp. There'll be 48 teams come to the City of Kindness and six will walk away with state championship trophies after Saturday's Finals. The State af the Art floor is down at the Heartland Events Center - site of six games each of the three days including all six title matches. Grand Island, Grand Island Northwest and GI Central Catholic will also host games all three days. A statewide audience will tune in on championship Saturday to show the action and showcase Grand Island, now in its 3rd year at the tournament host. "Oh we've been anticipationg this for a long time. We're just so excited and delighted to have the state high school championships returning to Grand Island and here at the Events Center the excitement is in the air and building and ready to get those teams on the floor here tomorrow and get started," said Heartland Events Center Marketing Director Dianne Willey. Grand Island will also host the 2013 state tournament and perhaps make its permanent home here. Local coaches such as Hastings St. Cecilia's Alan Vancura whose team won its district title here in the City of Kindness last week to earn a trip to state is gland the trip isn't very far. "No, we don't have to worry about making hotel reservations and worry about where we're going to eat and so forth so it's nice for this area and over the past few years this area has been just dominant in volleyball. So, I think, it's good for this area of the state to have a chance to see some very good volleyball so we're looking forward to it," said Vancura. Having the tournament in your hometown is great enough but playing in the tournament in your hometown is even better, including Thursday when they take on Columbus Scotus in the quarterfinals. "The people of Grand Island are going to do everything they can to make sure it's a comfortable environment and a very good atmosphere for kids. I think its going to be even better this year than it was last year and everyone from Grand Island wants it to be successful," said GICC Volleyball Coach Sharon Zavala. The past two years several of the quarter and semi-final games were in Hastings. This year they are all in Grand Island where attendance records could be broken. So for the next three days it'll be state champions volleyball from early morning until late at night and Grand Island has proclaimed itself ready to once again be gracious host. |
