Huskers fall to Georgia in bowl game
In their three losses this season which were arguably their three biggest games the Nebraska defense was embarrassed giving up an average of 597 yards in those contests.
Could the Blackshirts change their fortunes Tuesday facing their toughest challenge of the year? Let's head out to Orlando for the Capital One Bowl. First series for the Dogs. Aaron Murray going deep, but PJ Smith there to pick it off and a nice return after the interception for the senior. Blackshirts showing up early. After blocking a Brett Maher punt, the Dogs would get a safety out of it so they're up 2-0. Arthur Lynch went for the 29 yard score. Up 9-0 early on. The Huskers would bounce right back with an important drive with Taylor hitting Jamal Turner for 6. 75 yard drive, Big Red down two. More "D" for the Huskers, what a change right? Will Compton picks off Murray and takes it back for 6. First career INT for the senior linebacker. Nebraska takes the lead. The Bulldogs would come back though with an emphatic response the very next play. Murray down deep to Tavarres King. Andrew Green absolutely abused on this play, a 75 yard strike for Georgia. And they are back up 16-14. We go to the 3rd. Rex is going to take it from Taylor and take it right into the house. It puts the Huskers up 31-23. A back and forth game. But, as they did all day, the Dogs answer right back. Murray with a beautiful pass to the endzone to Chris Conley. This one's good for 49 yards, splits the defenders, and they'd go for two and get it so we're all tied up. Georgia would take the lead on the next play and that would be for good. To Keith Marshall, this one's for 29 yards and a great catch by Marshall for the touchdown strike makes it 38-31, Georgia. Huskers, trying to mount a comeback in the final minutes. Just over 7 to go and Taylor was picked off as Nebraska drops this one in Orlando with a final score of 45-31. The Huskers close out the season 10-4. In their 4 losses they gave up 53.5 points per game on average and 595 yards of total offense in those games. "I thought we were right in there; I thought we were going to win the football game," said Coach Bo Pelini. "We were right there until the long pass play. I still felt we were in pretty good shape. I thought we were in better condition as a football team. I don't think our guys were quite as tired. I thought the two biggest plays in the game where when we took the lead and we were up 31-23 and we gave up the long touchdown pass when we should've made that play. And, obviously, the fumble, our turnover. I thought right there the momentum shifted a little bit. But I still we had an opportunity to win the game." "When it comes down to it they made more plays than we did. It came down to third down a lot and we gave up big plays. I don't really recall them driving on us continuously. We'd get them on third down and they'd make a play. They made more plays than we did today," said Will Compton. With the loss Bo Pelini falls to 2-3 in bowl games as Nebraska's head coach. |
