Rex Burkhead delivers for the Huskers
Heading into Friday's contest against the Hawkeyes, the Husker offense had been a juggernaut leading the conference with just a shade under 480 yards a game.
Then, the wind and the cold came into play in Iowa City leaving the Huskers with 92 first half yards - only 10 of which coming in the second quarter. So, they turned to Rex Burkhead who had been shelved since the Northwestern game on October 20th. And he delivered rushing for 69 yards on 16 carries in the second half while scoring the go ahead touchdown. "I warmed up. Because before they game they had told me if we need you, we're going to play you. I warmed up just like I was going into the game and prepared all week like I was playing," said Burkhead. "He was chomping at the bit. I thought it would be a mental boost for us and I talked to him, I talked to the trainer and I kinda went into the game thinking we're only going to play him if we need him. And I thought we needed him at that point and I said, how do you feel about it and Rex said, let's go," said Coach Bo Pelini. "I'm glad to be out there with the guys again. I miss being out there and having fun with the guys and most importantly putting a "W" on the board," Burkhead said. |
