Five Star Performer: Carol O'Keefe
This week's News 5's Five Star Performer sponsored by Aurora Cooperative has been a friendly, smiling face at St. Cecilia high school for many years.
When the girl's basketball team won a state title, no one could have been happier than one of their greatest fans. As the St. Cecilia Hawkette basketball team made its run to the Class C-1 title in Lincoln, one word inspired them: "Believe." That word was carried by one of the team's most loyal fans, Carol O'Keefe, herself a former Bluehawk state champion basketball player of yesteryear. For this year's players, Carol is a person high on their list of many to thank-and she has been for a long time. "Carol O'Keefe actually had that last year when we were the 8th seed and were playing the #1 team at state so she is standing up there with believe the entire time and never sits down and she was there again this year doing the same thing," said Charise Farmer. "Carol, she's a great lady and it was great to see her holding that through the whole thing," said Abby Jackson. "It's nice to always having the fans we have support us and know we can do it when sometimes we even doubt ourselves but they are always there to believe in us," Lexi Schmidt said. Carol herself politely declined our request to talk to us for this story, typical of her unselfishness wanting instead the players to get the attention and credit. Other Bluehawk fans know how much Carol and other like her mean to the St. Cecilia athletic program. Carol and many other parents have seen their children follow them as excellent students and athletes at St. Cecilia a generating later truly building an unmistakable family atmosphere. "Well, I think it's probably very exciting for the kids to follow in some of their parents footsteps and we have got great fans at St. Cecilia and it's really exciting to all the kids to have that," said Cindy Rolls. There are many fans of this championship team to thank for their undying loyalty, but Carol O'Keefe made sure everyone at the Devaney Center know that what she would "believe" would become the state championship dream come true. |
