Five Star Performer: Chatrice White
It seems that this week's News 5 Five Star performer has her best days on the court ahead of her.
Shelby-Rising City Husky basketball player Chatrice White has been an unstoppable force, and college basketball coaches have noticed that for a long time. Chatrice White of the Shelby Rising City Huskies is definitely a high profile high school basketball player. Coach Connie Yori of the Huskers sure hopes Chatrice comes to play at Nebraska. So does the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame where Chatrice might one day be written about in the Irish Sports Report newspaper. Only a junior in high school, it'll be about 2 years before Chatrice does play college ball, but the mail call at her house in Shelby now sure is interesting. "There are letters that come everyday and she has to make appointments to call the coaches and make sure they they're available. So many of them are from the same Universities, two or three a day some of them, it's six or seven letters everyday," said Nitha White, Chatrice White's Mother. Chatrice has already visitied some of the schools she has heard from. It's quite exciting for she and her family to travel to these campuses and anticipate her playing college ball. "It's so amazing to see the schools to see the people at these schools, to see the kids that are there and go wow, my kin is one of them being recruited," said Bob White, Chatrice White's Father. At 6 foot 3 inches, Chatrice dominates most games averaging more than 20 points and 14 rebounds a contest. However, she also plays on a summer league team that travels to such cities as Cincinnati and Las Vegas and plays against All-Stars from all over the nation. That is much tougher competition against people her size. "Every game during the summer I'm not the tallest on the court for every game, there is someone bigger and stronger and faster than I am," said Chatrice White, Shelby-Rising City Husky Star. Playing for the Shelby Huskies reminds us of another athlete from this town that struck gold, Olympic gold. Bobsled champion Curt Tomasevicz and his Night-train teammates won the gold medal in Vancouver back in 2010, Chatrice and Curt know each other. "Curt has been an amazing role model for me ever since I was growing up. He actually lived right across the street from me when we lived in town so that was really cool. I like to be associated with Curt because he's such a great athlete and a great person so it's really cool to be held up there with him," said Chatrice. With only one loss this season, Chatrice and the Huskies hope to be part of March Madness at the state basketball tournament in Lincoln and odds are they have a shot at winning the state championship. After that, she'll decide which college to attend making one coach happy and many others disappointed. |
