Five Star Performer: Sutton Class C Golfers

Class C's state golf tournament promised to be a down to the wire thriller. It certainly was, and the winning squad id the subject of our Aurora Cooperative News 5 Five Star Performance.

News 5's Kyle Thomas has the story of Mustang Mania.

The Mustangs of Sutton are once again Class C state champions and by just the slimmest of margins beating the neon invasion of Kearney Catholic and Plainview by just one stroke 637 to 638, a feat 2010 individual champion Reid Wiebe says, is just the way it goes on the links.

"That's the way golf goes it's that away golf goes it comes down to every last shot, every shot counts and that is just the way it goes," said Wiebe.

But according to Coach Steve Ramer it was the experience of his team knowing what needed to be done that actually got it done.

"Well, you know we've got good leadership on our team with four seniors and a junior, that's been to the state tournament several times so you know that's if they play against par and against themselves and knew that they had to do and they did a great job of it," said Coach Ramer.

What they did is run down a Kearney Catholic team which had a ten stroke lead after the Stars top four golfers shot in the 30's on the front nine.

"They shot amazing on the front nine and you know they really made a run at it. They made a good stab at it and we knew Plainview was another team. They both came within one stroke and you know we were pretty fortunate. We had some. You know, at any championship you have to have a few breaks go your way and we chipped in for a couple of eagles and birdies here and there and you know that was the difference," said Coach Ramer.

And for the group of four seniors Reid Wiebe, Lance Spongberg, Dustin Sheidemann and Samuel Griess winning another state title is a great way to ride off into the sunset.

"I'm a senior this year and two out of four that's especially something you dream of just to have all your team members on the same page and play well for a stretch of two days, it really feels great," Wiebe said.
