Soccer players come out for 12th Annual Jonathan Reiber Tournament
When Hastings College Bronco soccer player Jonathan Reiber died tragically in 1999, his friend and teammate Jason Marr made sure he would never be forgotten, He organized the annual Jonathon Reiber Memorial Soccer Tournament to raise scholarship money.
Saturday marks year #12 of this continuing legacy. Hastings College soccer player Jonathon Reiber died in September of 1999 when his car was struck by a drunk driver. Since 2001 his then Bronco teammate Jason Marr has organized this annual soccer event in Hastings to honor his good friend's memory by setting up a college scholarship fund in Jonathon's name. Evan Price, who like Jonathon Reiber played soccer for the Hastings High Tigers is the beneficiary of two of those scholarships. Though he is too young to remember Jonathon Reiber, he is anxious to honor Jonathon's memory. "Six years ago, I think, I came out here and saw this tournament, heard about what happened to him and the story that has been told about the great life that he has had and the tournament that they put on out here is great cause everybody gets to come out here and play the game he loved and play for him," said Price. "We're going to break the $40,000 total mark, we'll see where we end up today, but we are pretty close to our highest total ever so that really speaks to the support of the community that this has had for this," said Marr. This is the 12th annual Jonathon Reiber Memorial soccer tournament and has always happened here in late July and is one week many people always circle on their calander. "I had a couple reference that to me as they now view it as a holiday that they look forward to as they would any other holiday," Marr said. "Our son was special to us, but to have Jason and his mother and all of the Piel family and all the other families that are working so hard to put this on every year in Hastings where we're from originally is wonderful to have folks remember our son, but also to have this kind of gathering with young people coming out that I don't know who they are it means it's ongoing and more young people are here and it's a beautiful thing," said Jonathon's father Doug Reiber. Many of this years' players in this Memorial Tournament like Evan are too young to remember Jonathon Reiber. Those that would be Jonathon's age now and even older will continue to make sure he's never forgotten. |
