Wrestler Fruchtl signs with Hastings Broncos
Hastings Bronco wrestling coach Shawn Kelley didn't have to travel far to sign his most recent prize recruit.
Grand Island Northwest's state champion Blake Fruchtl became a Bronco Tuesday. Blake won the state title in February here in Omaha and won two others as a freshman and sophomore. He sat out his junior season after transferring from Grand Island to Northwest. There is no doubt coach Kelley feels Blake has a chance to contribute to the team from the time he steps on campus and the season begins. Blake signed on the dotted line Tuesday afternoon after school at Northwest. After what he's done on the mat as a high school wrestler, it is no surprise he signs a college scholarship. For Blake, Hastings is close, right down the road about 20 miles where he hopes the winning can continue. "Like Coach Kelley said we have a young team down at Hastings and I'm just excited about getting down there and change the program around and get things going," said Fruchtl. "We were on him early, we had some pretty good connections with him. I think we realistically met what he needed as a program and has a good support program of people on campus already. His family is close, they are all alumni. He's got teammates that he knows," said Kelley. "It will be easy for us to get a couple of coaches to go down and watch Blake and get some kids and watch him compete at Hastings College so that's a great thing for us for him to be right down the road," said Coach Brian Sybrandts. Since the Bronco wrestling program began in 2007, Coach Kelley has sent 33 of his wrestlers to the NAIA National Touranment and has had two All-Americans. He definitely is counting on Blake Fruchtl to increase both of those numbers in the near future. The season starts in October. |
