In this week's News 5's Five Star Performer sponsored by Aurora Cooperative, Colin Murphy takes us to the town of Shelton to meet a runner who is already a state champion and for whom the best may be yet to come.

Sophomore Kalyn Brannagan has a few hobbies.

"I enjoy hurdling, I've been doing it forever," said Brannagan.

Add collecting medals to her list of hobbies.

"It's exciting to see my accomplishments, what I have done and I hope to keep doing that and hope to keep getting more and add them to the collection," Brannagan said.

As a freshman, she won two gold medals at the state track meet including, an All-Class Gold in the 300 hurdles.

"Every meet you go out there and wonder is she going to set another record, what's her time going to be?" said Shelton Track Coach Ron Blase.

Brannagan holds six school records.

"I'm not a very good loser, I love to win. It's nice," said Brannagan.

A few weeks ago, she won 4 gold medals at the Central Nebraska Track and Field Championships. After two events, her coach thought about sitting her out for the final two.

"I tried to talk her out of competing in the 400 and 300 hurdles because they were actually back to back, she was very adamant she wanted to do both," said Blase.

Kalyn's competitive drive doesn't just kick in at big meets In order to push herself at practice, Brannagan runs with the boys.

"I know most of the time I'm not going to beat them but I try my hardest and I want to try and make myself better," said Brannagan.

Kayln is hoping to qualify for four events at state this year.

"A lot of people say running is not fun at all but I enjoy it," Brannagan said.

Winning makes everything enjoyable.
