Five Star Performer: Spencer Kucera
It has been quite an historic season for the Southern Valley Eagles on the Hardwood. They qualified for the state tournament for the second time in school history.
And this time, they took the title for *a big reason* -their big man Spencer Kucera. When Sutton and Southern Valley Squared off in the Class C-2 State Championship on Saturday The game plan for the Eagles was simple. "Get it inside," said Hunter Quinn, Southern Valley Eagles. "We wanted to get Spencer the ball. That was our plan. They had no one that could match-up with him," said Dakota Best, Southern Valley Eagles. There's not many guys that can match-up with him in all of class C," said Quinn. And why not? The 6 foot 9 senior came into the Title Bout Averaging close to a double-double with over 14 points and nearly 9 boards a game. Not to mention a slight height advantage over the guard-laden mustang squad. "I just knew coming into this game I was seven inches taller than their tallest player and I knew that if I didn't do what I needed to do, we wouldn't be standing here right now. And here we are," said Spencer Kucera, Southern Valley Senior. Safe to say he did what he needed to do. As Kucera, put up 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the 38 to 34 overtime triumph over Sutton. Scoring 19 of Southern Valley's 29 points in regulation. And when he wasn't scoring he still had his fingerprints all over the Eagles offense. As he either scored or assisted on 12 of the 13 Southern Valley baskets "The neat think about our kids is they are very unselfish and they don't really care who gets points. They knew Spencer was a miss-match and they knew they were going to have trouble having answers for him. That's kind of the way it is. That's what's so neat about a team atmosphere," said John Miller, Southern Valley Head Coach. "He did a great job. He posted on the block. One of the things we wanted to do was try and get him off the block and even when we did he was very active to the basket going to the basket, and again, give them a lot of credit. They executed their offense very well," said Steve Spongberg, Sutton Head Coach. Now that the season is over... collegiate ball appears to be up next on the Docket for Kucera "I think he can definitely play at that level, it's just going to be up to Spencer from here on out I guess. What he wants to do with it. So he'll have to make some big decisions but I think he'd be a great asset to any college program. He's young yet. He's got a lot of growth potential yet and I think he has got a lot of room to get better in basketball," said Miller. "I got a couple of colleges looking at me. I'll probably go to a junior college and then hopefully go bigger," said Kucera. But no matter what the future holds he'll always have the 2013 Class C-2 Championship "Never believed we'd be here right now. It feels great," said Kucera. |
