Game of the Week: Harvard vs Shelton (9/07/12)
Our Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week preview moves to an 8 man football contest. It will be a matchup of the Harvard Cardinals and Shelton Bulldogs.
Both were impressive winners opening night and that's just one reason this matchup should be interesting. Harvard football stadium, site of many exciting games over the years, but a football stadium that will be silent this Friday. Despite the best efforts to fix the field, for whatever reason, the drought, scorching temperatures, it is unplayable, dirt spots are many places grass would be. The sign says it all, the home opener scheduled this Friday will instead be at Shelton. "Initially, we were kind of disappointed about it. We were really looking forward to having a new field, but it's something we addressed early on and we overcame it and put it in the rear view mirror and just are going forward as if we're supposed to start out with two road games," said Harvard Football Coach Sam Boshart. After a rousing road win at SEM, the Cardinals looked forward to coming home. Instead, it'll be back on the bus Friday afternoon for the ride to Shelton for the 7:00 game. The game, instead, is here at Shelton Bulldog Stadium where the field is perfect. Instead of Harvard's home opener, this will be Sheltons, and the unexpected bonus for the Bulldogs which they'll gladly take. "We'll take it if we can get it. We really don't like the circumstances how we got it, but it's, still, we can treat it as a home game. Our kids don't have to travel and it makes it a lot easier for us," said Shelton Football Coach Mike Lowe. Facing an explosive Shelton team in its opener against Hampton is tough enough, but to do it here on the fast track of Bulldog Stadium will be ever tougher. Nonetheless, it has a chance to be a competitive game, if not an exciting one. "I think it'll be a really good one back and forth. We're hoping to do some things and then I'm sure they'll have some things for us too, but I just think it'll be a really good football game," said Boshart. "I just think there are a lot of unknowns right now. We haven't played them recently; they haven't played us. They can kind of change up. They've got the speed to kind of throw the ball around, run the ball outside and things like that and, as I said, we're just looking to run it up the middle and we'll just have to see how it plays out. If their speed can overcome us we might have to outscore them," said Lowe. One more note of interest about our Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week: Harvard coach Sam Boshart is a former wide receiver at Wood River. His position coach back then? Shelton head coach Mike Lowe. "We got a pretty good relationship, he's a real good kid, he was a real good kid back in high school and I wish nothing but the best for him except for Friday night," said Lowe. "Mike was receiver coach in high school, my senior year so it's a neat way to look at it, a fun way just to play against him as a guy I kind of looked up to back in high school," Boshart said. |
