Game of the Week: Kenesaw vs Shelton
This week's Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week pits schools from Class D-2. Shelton has destroyed every opponent in sight. Their lowest offensive output? 52. Closest game? A 44-point win over Fullerton.
On the other side is 5-1 Kenesaw who's only blemish on the resume is a loss at Giltner.On Friday. The Blue Devils and the Bulldogs square off for the District 6 title. "This is what you work for all season long and in the off season to get ready to put yourself in a position to make the playoffs and then be able to perform at that level," said Kenesaw Coach Craig Schnitzler. "Friday night's game against Shelton certainly is a great measuring stick of where we're at right now." "It's kind of the marquee matchup on our schedule. Both teams coming in hot; both teams coming rolling along," said Shelton Coach Mike Lowe. "We're undefeated. Their only loss is to the #1 team in the state so should be a real good time for both of us." In a huge rivalry game like this one you can throw the records out the window because bragging rights are all that matter. "You get to know some of the people over there. You play them every year so you form sort of a bond, but you just always want to beat the other," said Kenesaw center/linebacker Michael Duffy. "You just always want to be better." "It means alot. It doesn't mean just us football players. It's everybody. I mean, the wrestlers, when they coop every year with them in wrestling it means a lot. It sounds just like a football game, but it's a rivalry. You get that one win under your belt and you talk about that the whole year," said Shelton quarterback Clayton Stoppekotte. When two physical football teams like these two get together, there's a good chance it will be decided in the trenches. "You know, we gotta do what we do best and that's run the football and use our front five. They've done a great job and we're going to need a great effort out of them again on Friday night," said Schnitzler. "If we don't get the push we need then we're not going to be able to get our offense going. Or if we don't get the pass rush we need there we're going to have problems," Duffy said. "We wanna be able to run the ball consistently and if we have to throw in a pass every once in awhile to gain some yards we'll do that too. But control on the line of scrimmage is going to be the key to the game for both teams, I think," said Lowe. "Expect a lot of hard hitting; lot of big boys and a lot of big boys moving around. Should be a lot of hard hittin' football and a lot of run action," Stoppekotte said. So, what's the guru's take on this matchup? "This is a great rivalry game. Shelton is at a high tide right now as far as their program goes. Kenesaw has been there for awhile. They've got a lot of explosive ability in the back field. I think there will be a lot of points, but I think at the end Kenesaw has probably got a little more defense. I think Kenesaw wins the game," said Huskerland Prep editor Bob Jensen. |
