Game of the Week: Sutton vs Doniphan-Trumbull
We know this much about Tuesday night's Class C-2 State semi-final game: one of our popular area teams will head for Memorial Stadium in Lincoln and the state final next Tuesday morning at 10:15.
Will it be the Doniphan-Trumbull Cardinals or Sutton Mustangs? That will be settled in what should be a classic rematch starting Tuesday night at 6:30 at the home of the Mustangs.in our Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week. There is no doubt what is on the minds of both the Doniphan-Trumbull Cardinals and Sutton Mustangs. Just like the sign says here in Doniphan, a trip to Lincoln for the Class C-2 title game next week. Here at Sutton, they even have an aerial shot of Memorial Stadium up on this poster in the lobby reminding everyone of their desired destination. "There is nothing to save, there is no tomorrow, you know you're one game from where you want to be be so you just have to put everything on the line," said Sutton Coach Steve Ramer. "We felt like if things came together right we had a great opportunity and we went out and played a good Ravenna team again and had a huge victory going up to Crofton and beating those guys and then another one so we're excited about the opportunity and hopefully to get to Lincoln," Doniphan-Trumbull Coach Brent Breckner said. October 5th in Sutton the teams played a down to a wire thriller. The Cardinals led most of the way before the Mustangs rallied to win in the last seconds, 36-29. They have quarterback Cole Wiseman and running back Noah Johnson; DT has running back Jordan Slough and quarterback Riley Wilfong. Both have rolled through playoff competition, both with impressive wins last week so the right to go to Lincoln will be one earned the hard way, against each other and deciding which team would play for the coveted state title. "Yeah, I think it'll be a good fourth quarter battle and I think we talk about two teams that offensively and defensively do things right and that's why we're at this point but it's a state semi final game. You would expect a hard fought game," said Ramer. "They're a well coached team. We had a good football game there earlier in the season and it was in district play and it was a good football game. We're expecting a good football game, it was one we looked at and said hey we'd like to get another shot at that one and it worked out and they've been playing great football and it'll be two good football teams playing Tuesday night," Breckner said. "Oh, I think it'll fill up really fast and it will be really loud on both sides and it should be on heck of a high school football game," said Ramer. This shapes up to be one of the more exciting games this area has seen in some years. Not only because of the excellence of the teams but for what it at stake, no less than the chance of a lifetime for these players playing in the state championship game at Memorial Stadium next week. |
