Games of the Week: Sutton, Giltner (11/18/12)
This week's Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week isn't just one, but two games as we turn our attention to the State Football Championships.
Memorial Stadium, one of the cathedrals of college football, but this week it turns into the epicenter of high school football. At least in the state of Nebraska.
The Giltner Hornets try and finish off their D-2 title run on Monday Morning while the Sutton Mustangs look to realize their dream on Tuesday in the C-2 championship game.
"You know, everyone's pumped up," Sutton Coach Steve Ramer said. "It's what they dream of playing on the Husker field so we're trying to control the emotions as best as possible. We know they're going to be excited."
"They're all about business, getting this thing accomplished that they've set out to do since the beginning of this year. It hasn't been too much to settle them down," Giltner Coach Jeff Ashby said.
The Hornets are gearing up for 12-0 Humphrey St. Francis while it's undefeated Aquinas Catholic for the Mustangs.
"They're gonna run the football and they're gonna run it well. They're a lot like us. I think they pass 5 times a game; we pass 4 times a game. So it's not going to be a lot of airing it out," said Ramer.
"Well, they're big up front. That front line - offensive, defensive line - those guys are really good. So, we've been pretty good at protecting Jake all year so we had to do a good job of protecting him," said Ashby.
How about that pre-game speech, coach?
"It's just been a super year no matter what happens. This has been a great ride for these seniors for four years and what they've accomplished is amazing. I'm pretty confident that if they do what they've been doing all year we'll be ok," said Ashby.
"I mean, if you can't get fired up for this one you got something wrong with ya," Ramer said.
