Fresh after returning from Iowa City to see former Giltner Hornet Drew Ott of the Iowa Hawkeyes play against the Huskers, Giltner coach Jeff Ashby and his team accepted congratulations for winning the state title.

Players and fans gathered to relive last week's 42-26 win over Humphrey St. Francis to complete a perfect 13-0 season here at Memorial Stadium.

Now with the trophy back in Giltner, its especially satisfying for several players whose fathers were on the 1984 title team including lineman and South Dakota State Recruit Dillion Gartner.

"It's an amazing feeling to know that you get to follow in your dad's footsteps and win a state title like they did in '84. Words can't explain it. It's the best feeling ever knowing that you won doing what your father did and repeat what he did," said Gartner.

"They hadn't been able to do it the last few years. They came so close. They knew they had to take care of business and it was going to take all season to do it. And we knew the teams we were going to have to run into in the playoffs so it didn't take too much to give them focus," said Coach Jeff Ashby.

For many of the Hornets it's now onto the basketball court where the school has won the last 2 D-2 championships, but without many of those stars that made that happen.
