Local wrestlers get ready for Omaha championship competition
Three days of madness, competition and fun is about to begin at the Century Link Center in Omaha.
The many wrestlers are about to gather on the map and get ready for matches that will be unforgettable. For those wrestling for the first time and those who have competed here before, like Tyler Joseph of the Adams Central Patriots, it's the ultimate finish to a season that has been outstanding. That is because you have to be good to even get here. "Its overwhelming, honestly, it's the best feeling I've ever had in my life," said Tyler Joseph. "It's a lot of fun to get kids through districts especially their first time. Just the work they've put in and the dedication they've shown and there's a lot of heartbreaks with the kids that don't make it, but with these seven that do they're all capable of winning a match down there. And a few of them have goals placing and placing high so we look forward to the state tournament and it's a nice way to end the season," said Adams Central Coach Dan Lonowski. The Patriots will bring seven wrestlers to the state tournament, though they have no district champions. Derrick Lonowski at 160 pounds has a great chance to medal. Four time defending champion Grand Island is favored to repeat as Class A champion and perennial champion Omaha Skutt is again favored to capture the Class B championship. Hastings Tiger wrestlers will send eight competitors to the Century Link Center Thursday. Led by their undefeated #1 ranked 106 pounder Nolan Laux, the Tigers hit the mat Thursday morning in the first session of the Class A competition followed by the round of quarterfinals. Walking away with medals is what the Tiger have clear aim for and, yes, the bleached hair for the Tigers is back. "Some of the wrestlers this year didn't want to do it, but we made sure they did it this year. (And you're happy to do it?) Yes, it's definitely worth being made fun of at school to go to state," said Caleb Neugen. "It's fun for the team. You get to go; you get to dye your hair," Brandon Kyle said. "Well, it's my first time going to state so I didn't know, but it's a tradition all the state qualifiers bleach their hair," said Nate Morrow. |
