State wrestling begins in Omaha
Can the Grand Island Islanders win a 5th straight state wrestling title? Can Hastings Tiger Nolan Laux complete an unbeaten season with a state championship?
Those are just two of the questions we ask as the first of three days of competition begins today in Omaha. Let's go to the Century Link Center in Omaha where Nolan wrestles Millard West's Matt Toring in the quarterfinals. Nolan picks up 3 back points enroute to his 2nd win of the day achieving a 19-4 tech fall. Nolan is 42-0 this season. At 113 pounds Tiger teammate Brandon Kile gets it done as well. He takes down Mike Conley of Papio enroute to a 4-2 decision for his 2nd win on the day and its onto the semi final Friday. At 126 Matt Bolan of Grand Island takes down Eric Vargas of Omaha Westside enroute to a 9-7 decision. Matt will be in Friday's semis where he lost last year. Now at 138 pounds, its Andrew Rojas earns a 2 point takedown but would drop a narrow 2nd round decision 12-9 to Reggie Holt-Wesley of Omaha North. At 182 pounds after winning his opener, Grand Island's Haris Talundzic drops his match by a pin to Jake Anderson of Creighton Prep. Then at 220, Edgar Silva from the Islanders wins a 2-0 decision over Austin Anderson of Bellevue East, Edger is on to the semis Friday. 5 Islanders, 2 Tigers and 6 Kearney Bearcats are in the semi finals Friday night. |
