Wrestlers take championship titles in Omaha
Saturday's championship round of the Nebraska state wrestling tournament in Omaha promised to be a memorable day for many area competitors.
Undefeated Hastings Tiger Nolan Laux comes in with a 42-0 record. Let's make that 43-0 as he dominates his championship match in a 9-2 victory over Otis Rollins of Burke and jumps into the arms of his father Brian Laux, the Hastings Tiger coach. Now Dante Rodriguez of the defending champion Grand Island Islanders at 120 pounds. Dante takes down Keegan Williams of Lincoln Southwest for the two. Dante celebrates in style on the mat. Now to GI's Matt Bolan against Kearney's defending champ Hunter Bamford at 126 pounds. Hunter once again wins the title with the victory to finish 41-1 on the season for his 3rd state title. Another Bearcat-Islander battle happens at 132 as Trey Trujillo of GI takes on Austin Marshall. Trey achieved 3 back points to turn the match in his favor winning the decision and doing a backflip on the mat to celebrate his championship. Onto Class C and Kyle Sutton of the Central City Bison wrestling at 138 pounds. He finished with a 9-3 decision to take the title at his weight class. Now teammate Jake Anderson at 152 pounds. He comes through with a state title with a 19-7 major decision. It is Jake's 3rd state title. It's also a good day for Jake Brown of Central City. He makes it a perfect 4 for 4 for Darin Garfield's Bison with a 13-2 major decision. Another great match in Class C was turned in by Kearney Catholic's Thomas Connely. He won a 170 pound championship decision with a 7-3 win to go 39-2 on the season. |
