Game of the Week: Sutton vs St. Cecilia (9/27/12)
As we approach mid-season in high school football, some teams are simply trying to keep their best players on the field. Avoiding injuries and having a week off at the right time are crucial.
Those could be factors as the Sutton Mustangs meet the St. Cecilia Bluehawks in Friday's Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week. Plays like the punt return reverse from Brody Yost to Noah Johnson have defined the Sutton Mustangs so far this season. They'll take their 4-0 mark into Duncan Field Friday to face the Bluehawks. Both Cole Wiseman and Trey Ramer average rushing over 100 yards a game. Sutton's offense ranks 2nd in Class C-2. The Mustangs are rested and come off a bye week which could be an advantage. "I think momentum is great, but we needed a week off. It was good for us to heal up the little bumps and bruises. Plus it allowed us two weeks to focus on our next opponent and I still believe Hastings St. Cecilia is the obvious district favorite because of the many years they've won it and it is a team we obviously have to get ready to play," said Sutton Coach Steve Ramer. When St. Cecilia lost to Blue Hill 2 weeks ago, the Bluehawks first regular season loss since 2006, they were without quarterback Xander Schmidt for the 2nd half. They had no trouble defeating Superior 67-0 last week without him, but Xander is reportedly going to sit out Friday's game as will some other injured starters, so the Bluehawks will not be at full strength. It didn't matter against a winless Superior team, it may against an undefeated Sutton club. "Defensively we have had to scramble. We've had a lot of kids out of the lineup so we have Freshmen and Sophomores playing in some places in the secondary doing a nice job and we're just coaching harder and they are getting more reps," said St. Cecilia Coach Carl Tesmer. The Hawks will get two key play makers back this week. Both wide receiver Cesar Teamo and running back and defensive back Nick Brouleitte should be on the field. "It's pretty crucial with Nick Brouliette at running back and defensive back having him back because we have had people in new positions last week. They're trying hard to learn new positions. New plays and stuff at that position and so it'll be easier for our team to focus this week," said St. Cecilia lineman Lance Schmidt. No matter who's playing, St. Cecilia is hard to defeat at Duncan Field, but Blue Hill did it and Ravenna almost did. Can Sutton deal them another loss Friday? "I tell you what, Sutton has been very impressive. Undefeated, certainly, have maybe exceeded expectations. They've got a nice mix of players coming back. St. Cecilia has a surprising loss by the magie of Duncan Field, I don't know," said Huskerland Prep Editor Bob Jensen. "It's a scary deal to go in there. I still think Sutton finds a way to win the ballgame which would be really weird for St. Cecilia to lost twice in the regular season." The winner of this Aurora Coopeative Game of the Week could have the inside track on capturing the district title and therefore have a huge impact on playoff matchups to come in a few weeks.
