Game of the Week: York vs Aurora
Friday's Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week matches Class B neighbors. The Aurora Huskies and York Dukes have a district championship at stake in the final regular season game for both teams.
In recent years, the Huskies have controlled the series, just like they've dominated most others. The Dukes believe they can reverse their fortunes Friday. The colorful water tower of York presents a backdrop for this week's Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week. A few miles away the lines are are being drawn at Levitt Stadium not far from the campus of York high school for Friday's district title game with the York Dukes hosting the Aurora Huskies. We are used to seeing the Huskies play good football given their recent back to back state championships, but the Dukes are a new player to winning football. The Dukes 21-10 win last week over the Northwest Vikings got everyone's attention. It gives the Dukes four straight victories. When coach Glen Snodgrass took over last season, we knew it wouldn't be long before York was good and no one knows that better than Aurora coach Randy Huebert. Before Northwest lost to York, they shutout Aurora 54-0 in perhaps the most surprising game of the season. Afterall, Aurora is 6-2 and they never loss that badly. Glen Snodgrass says he doesn't get into that comparative score business. "You can never get into comparing scores, you know Aurora turned the ball over a lot of times in that Northwest game and, yes, Grand Island Northwest played tremendous in that game to get that big margin of victory, but every week is a new game and I just don't think that has a whole lot of brearing when we play Aurora," said Snodgrass. That being said, this is an opportunity for the Dukes that they haven't had in a long time. Actually having a chance against Aurora, a squad that in recent years has had their way with them. "If we can get past the aura of who we're playing against, you know, 'cause, like I said, we've been kind of beaten down by these guys for quite awhile and I think we will get past that and our guys are going to compete and they'll be excited and they're going to go out there and compete and play hard," Snodgrass said. "York with a mighty impressive win over Grand Island Northwest and I'll be honest I'm a big believer in momentum. I don't see any reason why York won't win this game which would provide with one of the most amazing district finishes in the state in any class," said Huskerland Prep Editor Bob Jensen.
